FORCE

Force is defined as a push or pull which produces or tends to produce a change in the state of rest or of uniform motion of a body

Note - Force is a vector quantity and derived quantity .

UNITS

SI-   NEWTON

CGS-   DYNE

M.K.S.-   Kilogram force (kgs)

1 NEWTON =10^5DYNE

1 kgs  = 9.81 NEWTON

EFFECTS OF A FORCE

            A force can

(A) Bring a body in motion

(B) Change the motion of a body

(C) Change the shape are size of a body

REPRESENTATION OF A FORCE AND CHARACTERISTIC OF A FORCE

To represent a force, various quantities called characteristics of a force are given as : -

(A) Magnitude of force

(B) Direction of force

(C) Line of action of force

(D) Sense or nature of the force (Push or Pull)

PRINCIPLE OF TRANSMISSIBILITY OF FORCES

It states that if a force, acting a point on a rigid body is shifted to any other point which is on the line of action of the force, the external. effect of the force on the body remains unchanged

LAW OF SUPERPOSITION

According to this law there will be no effect on the acting of a given system of forces acting on a rigid body if added or subtracted from them another system of forces which is also in equilibrium
